ESPOL recrute un·e doctorant·e pour le projet RECOGNITION : The Politics of Recognition: How Social Status and Recognition Shape Attachment to Democracy in France and Germany.

Financé par l’ANR-FRAL 2025 (appel franco-allemand en sciences sociales et humaines de l’Agence Nationale de la Recherche), ce projet est porté par le Dr. Maximilian Filsinger (ESPOL) en co-coordination avec le Prof. Dr Kathrin Ackermann (Université de Siegen).

Le projet examine comment la reconnaissance – le sentiment d’être valorisé et respecté par la société et les élites politiques – influence les attitudes politiques et le soutien à la démocratie, en analysant notamment le rôle des élites et les effets de la communication politique. Le travail sera comparatif entre la France et l’Allemagne et inclura des analyses expérimentales.

Le/la candidat·e retenu·e rejoindra le projet pour réaliser sa thèse de doctorat au sein d’ESPOL-LAB, en bénéficiant d’un encadrement scientifique et d’une expérience de recherche internationale.

Missions

* Mener des projets de recherche indépendants et collaboratifs dans le cadre thématique du département
* Publier les résultats de recherche dans des revues académiques de qualité, à comité de lecture
* Organiser et participer activement à des ateliers, conférences et séminaires académiques



Contexte de réalisation de la thèse

La thèse sera réalisée au sein du laboratoire ESPOL-LAB, sous la responsabilité et la direction de Johannes Karremans, Professeur en Science Politique et de Maximilian Filsigner, Maître de Conférences en Politiques Comparées.

Le poste est à pourvoir à partir du 1er septembre 2026 et pour une durée de 36 mois.

The European School of Political and Social Science (ESPOL) at the Catholic University of Lille invites applications for a PhD Candidate in the research project RECOGNITION: The Politics of Recognition: How Social Status and Recognition Shape Attachment to Democracy in France and Germany. The project is funded by the ANR-FRAL 2025, Franco-German call for proposals in Social Sciences and Humanities of the French National Agency for Research, and led by Dr. Maximilian Filsinger (ESPOL) in co-coordination with Prof. Dr. Kathrin Ackermann (University of Siegen).

The project studies how recognition – understood as the degree to which individuals feel valued and respected by society and political elites – shapes political attitudes and in particular democratic support. We argue that a lack of recognition can push individuals toward anti-establishment politics. To explore this, the project follows four objectives: (1) clarifying the concepts of status and recognition, (2) analysing how status and recognition are linked to democratic attachment, (3) investigating the role of political elites in shaping recognition, and (4) experimentally testing how elite communication affects perceived recognition and the link between subjective social status and attachment to democracy. The project will provide a comparative analysis of Germany and France. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to pursue his/her PhD in the context of the project at ESPOL.

Your tasks:

* Develop a research proposal and pursue a PhD degree
* Conduct independent and collaborative research projects within the department’s thematic scope
* Publish research findings in high-quality, peer-reviewed academic journals
* Organize and actively participate in academic workshops, conferences, and seminars

The PhD will be conducted within ESPOL-LAB under the supervision of Johannes Karremans, professor of Political Science and Maximilian Filsinger, Associate professor in Comparative Politics.

The position is available from September 1, 2026, for a duration of 36 months.
