University: Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour
Country: France
Deadline: Not specified
Fields: Electronic Engineering, Geophysics, Physics, Materials Science, Data Science
Are you passionate about advancing the frontiers of imaging technology and eager to contribute to innovative solutions for monitoring materials in real time? If you are motivated by the prospect of developing cutting-edge terahertz (THz) radar systems and making a tangible impact in both scientific and industrial domains, this PhD position at Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (UPPA) may be the perfect next step in your career.
This fully funded, 36-month doctoral opportunity focuses on real-time THz imaging of materials, offering hands-on work at the intersection of photonics, materials science, and data science. The position is part of the TERANANOPORES project, an interdisciplinary initiative funded by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, with strong academic and industrial collaborations.
About The University Or Research Institute
Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (UPPA) is a renowned public university located in Pau, France. It is recognized for its high-quality research in the sciences and engineering, fostering a collaborative and international academic environment. The successful candidate will join the Laboratoire des Fluides Complexes et leurs Réservoirs (LFCR), a leading research center focused on complex fluids and reservoir studies. UPPA’s research facilities are well-equipped for advanced experimentation, and the university maintains active partnerships with other prominent institutions such as IMS Bordeaux and IRCER, as well as with industrial partners like CTTC. This setting provides an excellent platform for interdisciplinary research and professional development.
Research Topic and Significance
The main focus of this PhD project is the development of compact, cost-effective THz radar systems for the real-time monitoring of porosity evolution and fracture formation in materials. Terahertz imaging is a rapidly evolving field with significant potential for non-destructive evaluation in geophysics, engineering, and industrial sensing. Current THz systems are expensive and bulky, limiting their widespread adoption. By advancing Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar technology, this research aims to create affordable and portable solutions, enabling real-time, in-situ monitoring of materials such as rocks. The outcomes of this project could revolutionize material characterization, providing new tools for both scientific inquiry and industrial applications.
Project Details
The TERANANOPORES project is supported by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and involves collaborations with the following partners:
– LFCR, Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (https://lfc.univ-pau.fr)
– IMS Bordeaux (https://www.ims-bordeaux.fr)
– IRCER (https://www.ircer.fr)
– CTTC (industrial partner, https://www.cttc.fr)
The PhD will be supervised by Dr. Federico Sanjuan and Dr. Jean-Paul Guillet (https://terahertz.fr). The successful candidate will contribute to the development of real-time signal processing and AI tools for imaging, design mechanical components for radar integration, perform experimental validations, and collaborate across multiple labs and institutions. There will also be opportunities to contribute to scientific publications and patents.
Candidate Profile
Required Education
This position is ideal for highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface of photonics, materials science, and data science. The following qualifications and skills are required or desirable:
– Master’s degree (or equivalent 5 years of study) in Electronic Engineering, Geophysics, Physics, or related fields
Preferred Age
– Under 30 years old
Languages
– English and/or French recommended
Required Skills
– Programming (any language)
