Description

The current energy context requires the implementation of innovative solutions for energy conversion, storage and distribution systems, to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in the fight against global warming. Various renewable energy conversion systems (solar, wind, etc.) and processes (biomass combustion or gasification, anaerobic digestion and methanation, etc.), as well as numerous energy recovery processes (cogeneration, waste to energy, etc.) are at the heart of innovative solutions for conversion and energy distribution. Each of them has advantages and drawbacks, and many studies focus on the individual optimization of such processes. However, it is necessary to run them as a whole, Multi-Energy Systems (MES), creating synergies between each of its sub-systems. Such MES are complex in design and difficult to operate. Therefore, numerical optimization of topology, sizing and operation seems to be quite a relevant approach.
The objective of the PhD is the mathematical optimization of topology (network design, selecting conversion units and their connections) and sizing (capacity of conversion and storage units), considering the transient variability of demand and resources. The formulation of such an optimization problem is of MIDO (Mixed-Integer Dynamic Optimization) type, including integer variables to model the existence of conversion units.
